The Wolsey

Enriched Tudor Oak Door

An enriched Tudor design where the door becomes a feature in its own right.

Enriched Tudor Door

A Door With Architectural Status

The Wolsey takes the ribbed Tudor door a stage further, with richer mouldings, more studwork and a pointed arch head, set in a frame with carved spandrels.

The detail recalls the more elaborate joinery of early 16th-century buildings, and it suits entrances where the door should be more than a practical closure.

Like all of our external doors, The Wolsey is individually made, allowing the level of enrichment, ironmongery and finish to be balanced with the architecture around it.

How It Is Made

Arch, Ribs And Studwork

Once the price is agreed, every door is drawn in CAD for your approval before making begins. These are the details that set The Wolsey apart from The Arundel.

I

Pointed Arch Head

The door and its frame follow a pointed arch, with carved spandrels in the corners of the frame.

II

Moulded Ribs

Ribs divide the face into three bays, with a richer profile than those on The Arundel.

III

Studwork

Studs run down each rib, around the arch and along the bottom rail.

IV

Boarded Back

Inside, the framed face is backed with horizontal boards, fixed through with studs and hung on strap hinges.

Door Details

Details Considered Around Every Opening

01

Insurance-Approved Locking Options

Insurance-approved locks can be specified around the door design, the security required and the character of the ironmongery.

02

Draught Proofing

Discreet seals are considered with the frame so the door remains practical without losing its traditional appearance.

03

Threshold Bars

Thresholds and weather bars are detailed around the opening, exposure and floor levels.

04

Traditional Ironmongery

Handles, latches, hinges, knockers and escutcheons can be chosen to suit the period and weight of the door.

05

Where natural light is needed, glass, glazing bars and mouldings are proportioned as part of the whole design.

06

Made-To-Measure Frames

Frames, linings, cills and surrounding joinery can be made with the door for a properly resolved installation.

07

Solid Timber Construction

Doors are built with traditional joinery methods and sections suited to long-term external use.

08

Finishes And Colour

Oak finishes, painted finishes and colour matching can be developed around the building and surrounding joinery.

09

Listed Building Sensitivity

Details can be informed by existing joinery, historic references or conservation requirements where appropriate.

A Feature In Its Own Right

The Wolsey is intended for entrances where the strength of the detail is part of the building's character.

The design can be quietly restrained or more decorative depending on the building, making it suitable for restored period homes, country houses and new work inspired by Tudor architecture. To begin, send us photographs of the entrance and the approximate size of the opening.
