Internal Plank Doors

Oak plank doors made to order for period homes, with wide boards, traditional ironmongery and matching linings.

Internal Plank Doors

A plank door's character comes from its proportion, its timber and well-resolved detail.

Internal plank doors sit naturally in cottages, farmhouses and the less formal rooms of larger period homes. We make each one to order in oak, with the boards, head, lining and ironmongery considered alongside the room around it.

Wide Oak Boards

A Simple Door, Properly Made

Each door is made from three wide oak boards, or four on a wider opening, between 22 and 25mm thick. Many plank doors are built from five or more narrow boards; fewer, wider boards give the door a calmer face and show more of the oak’s figure.

The boards are tongued and grooved, with a bead or applied scratch moulding along each joint, and held together by three horizontal ledges fixed with traditional rose-head nails. The head can be square or formed as a Tudor arch, like the door shown here.

Resolving The Door Set

Boards, Ironmongery And Surrounds

The apparent simplicity of a plank door places more weight on a few important decisions.

01

Boards & Ledges

Three or four wide tongue-and-grooved oak boards, finished with a bead or scratch moulding and held by three ledges fixed with rose-head nails.

02

Square Or Tudor-Arched Heads

The head can be square or formed as a Tudor arch, set out accurately against the opening before making begins.

03

Ironmongery

T-hinges and thumb latches in a natural beeswax finish as standard. On heritage projects, we design and commission hand-forged ironmongery.

04

Linings & Architraves

Matching door linings, architraves and door stops can be supplied with the door, so the whole opening is made as one set.

05

Finish

Our specialist timber finishing techniques give the oak a deep, settled colour that brings out the figure of the grain.

Commissioning A Plank Door

Begin with the opening and how it is used.

Photographs from both sides, approximate opening dimensions and details of the surrounding wall or joinery are useful at the outset. We can then agree the number of boards, the head shape, ironmongery and finish, and whether matching linings and architraves are needed.

The kitchen at the top of this page, plank doors included, was made in our workshop; see our traditional kitchens. Plank doors also sit well alongside our panelled internal doors and traditional external doors. To start a conversation, use the button below or email project@dcflimited.co.uk.
