Garden Furniture

Benches, tables and garden shelters designed for their setting and made to order in our Somerset workshop.

Furniture For The Garden

Outdoor furniture works best when its scale, position and purpose are considered together.

A garden bench, dining table or covered seat becomes part of the way an outdoor space is used. We develop each commission around its position, the number of people it needs to accommodate and the character of the garden or terrace in which it will stand.

The result may be a single piece or a group of related elements, made to order rather than selected from a fixed range.

Designed For Its Position

Furniture For A Particular Setting

The first decisions are practical: where the piece will sit, how it will be approached and whether it is intended for quiet seating, dining or shelter. Those answers establish the dimensions and form before decorative detail is considered.

Long tables and benches need to feel settled within their surroundings without crowding circulation. A curved bench can respond to a view or planting, while a garden shelter needs to provide a useful place to pause as well as a convincing presence in the landscape.

Before Making Begins

Use, Scale And Exposure

Outdoor commissions begin with the setting and the practical demands placed upon the finished piece.

01

Use & Position

The location, outlook and pattern of use help determine the form of the piece and how it should relate to paths, terraces or planting.

02

Scale & Form

Dimensions are developed around seating capacity, comfort, access and the proportions of the surrounding space.

03

Material & Care

We make outdoor pieces in oak, Accoya or iroko. The timber and finish are chosen for the setting, together with exposure, maintenance and how the surface is expected to change outdoors.

Commissioning Garden Furniture

A useful first brief combines the setting, intended use and approximate dimensions.

Photographs of the proposed position, broad measurements and an indication of how many people the piece should accommodate are useful at the outset. References for shape and character can be considered alongside the practical requirements before the design is developed.
