Traditional Oak Panelling

River Yeo Lodge

The oak panelling at River Yeo Lodge was designed, made and installed as a complete architectural treatment for the games room and the rooms that open from it. Panel sizes and mouldings respond to the scale of each space and adjust around doors, windows, the fireplace and fitted bookcases.

Setting Out the Room

The principal rails create a continuous line around the interior, while individual panel widths change to resolve corners and openings. This measured approach allows the walls to feel ordered without forcing every elevation into an identical pattern.

16th- and 17th-Century Detailing

The panelling draws on 16th- and 17th-century designs, using flat panels beneath a hand-carved frieze rail. At the window, the joinery turns into an integrated seat, carrying the oak work into the deep reveal and making practical use of the opening.

Bookcases and Carved Detail

In the games room, fitted bookcases are set into the panelling rather than standing against it. Hand-carved uprights and frieze detail carry the language of the walls into the shelving, so that the books become part of the room’s composition.

The carving on the overmantel and the armorial panel was also done in our Somerset workshop, worked from a photograph.

Discuss a Project

Every commission begins with the building and the way it is used. If you are planning panelling, a staircase, a library or other joinery for a period home, we would be glad to hear about it.
