Bookcases & Libraries
A good library gives books their place without allowing the shelving to overwhelm the room.

Architecture First
Designed Around the Room
A library can occupy a single wall or shape an entire room. Either way, we begin with the building: how bookcase bays meet corners, how shelf lines relate to doors and windows, and how the composition works around fireplaces, radiators and changes in ceiling height.
Period precedents then guide the proportions, mouldings, carving and degree of ornament, whether the room is Tudor, Jacobean, Georgian, Victorian, Edwardian or Arts & Crafts. In the Jacobean library at Boleskine House, dark oak bookcases are shaped around the windows, the fireplace and a substantial collection of books.

Practical by Design
The Working Parts of a Library
Good bespoke work depends on resolving the practical details before timber is cut. Each element is planned around what it needs to hold, conceal or support.
Shelving & Shelf Supports
Shelf heights, depths and bay widths are set around the collection. Adjustable shelves can sit on shelf pins, bookcase strips or traditional saw-tooth supports for an all-timber look.
Lower Cabinetry
Panelled cupboards and drawers provide quieter storage beneath the open shelves and give the bookcases a strong architectural base.
Integrated Lighting
LED shelf lighting, picture lights and lights on the bookcase pilasters can be planned in. We wire integrated LEDs to their drivers and route cables so your electrician can make the mains connections and second fix.
Library Ladders
Library ladders can be made to suit the bookcases, so that upper shelves remain usable without interrupting the design.
Seating, Desks & Doorways
Window seats, writing surfaces and doorways are composed with the bookcases from the outset, including concealed joinery where it suits the room.

Complete Library Interiors
More Than a Run of Shelves
A library is a room for reading, working and conversation as much as a place for books. Bookcases can be developed alongside panelling, door surrounds, window seats, desks and freestanding furniture, with closed cabinetry keeping modern equipment out of sight.
The Arts & Crafts library in the Cotswolds brings fitted bookcases, window seating, panelling, cabinets and integrated lighting together in one room. We work with homeowners, architects and interior designers to refine the layout, proportions and detail.

Materials & Finishing
The Final Layer of Character
Oak gives a library warmth and substance. Sapele mahogany brings a deeper colour and more formal character; we most often use it for individual freestanding bookcases, though a complete mahogany room is equally possible. We have also made bookcases in reclaimed pitch pine and painted bookcases in tulipwood, and walnut is available where it suits the room.
Timber, colour and moulding profiles are chosen together, in relation to the age of the property and the joinery around it. Our specialist finishing then gives the new work depth and surface character, so it sits comfortably within its setting and ages well with use.

A Bespoke Commission
A home library made for books, work and quiet everyday use.
From a single freestanding bookcase to a complete panelled library, each commission begins with a conversation about the property, the collection and the way the room needs to work. Photographs, approximate room dimensions and a sense of how many books need a home are a useful start, and our guide to planning a fitted library covers the main decisions.
Every library is drawn, made and finished in our Somerset workshop. Libraries are often planned alongside fireplaces and overmantels, oak panelled rooms and fitted storage. To start a conversation, use the button below or email project@dcflimited.co.uk.
