We are pleased to announce that Distinctive Country Furniture has been appointed to create heritage panelling for Boleskine House in the Highlands. The commission forms part of the wider restoration of the house and will bring traditionally made architectural joinery back into its principal rooms.

The work will include the recreation of bespoke oak and timber panelling, developed to give the interiors the warmth, proportion and architectural character appropriate to the building. A traditional stained finish and individually hand-carved decorative details will contribute depth and distinction without allowing the joinery to feel separate from the rooms around it.

Panelling made as part of the architecture

In a building of this character, panelling is more than a decorative surface. Its rails, stiles, panels and mouldings set out a regular pattern around the room, relating to openings, fireplaces and the wider arrangement of the interior. Getting those relationships right is central to creating new work that feels settled within an historic setting.

The Boleskine House commission will draw on the period knowledge, joinery skills and finishing experience held within our Somerset workshop. Each stage demands careful judgement, from interpreting the intended proportions and decorative language to making the individual elements and developing the final surface character.

This is precisely the kind of project for which our workshop is equipped: work that asks for a close understanding of historic interiors alongside the practical discipline needed to make substantial architectural joinery. The result must serve the restored building as a whole, not simply reproduce historic details in isolation.

Continuing the restoration of Boleskine House

The appointment marks an important stage in the return of Boleskine House’s interiors. We are proud to contribute our specialist knowledge to the project and to help re-establish the warmth and structure that timber panelling brings to its principal rooms.

We look forward to sharing more from the workshop as the commission develops. The Boleskine House Foundation’s contract announcement provides further information about this stage of the restoration.
